“It’s a real labor of affection,” wrote again David Garza on Friday when queried about the truth that his identify lists amongst 4 producers on final week’s largest album drop, Fiona Apple’s Fetch the Bolt Cutters. “Full-on Tejano invasion, I did all the quilt artwork and hand wrote the lyric artwork as nicely.”
To which he added, “For the file, the official album manufacturing credit score reads: Produced by Fiona Apple and Amy Wooden with Sebastian Steinberg and David Garza.”

Born and raised within the Dallas-Fort Value metroplex space, and turning into a star in 1989 at UT Austin when his collegiate trio Twang Twang Shock-A-Growth touched off its personal Beatlemania, Garza, 49, stays a musical and music business conduit adept at female muse assist. Edie Brickell, Juliana Hatfield, and Sara Watkins signify a mere three citations in that undocumented scroll. In 2018, he and Charlie Sexton enticed Apple to look on the Austin Music Awards, whereby the singer-songwriter-pianist fury made a Moody Theater throng maintain its collective breath.
“2001 started our journey collectively of many, many gigs and classes and collaborations, and many others.,” emails Garza about his affiliation with Apple. “There’s 2005, opening for her and enjoying guitar on her Extraordinary Machine tour, then the 2007 [concert film] Largo, and he or she sang on two of my songs for my 2009 Dream Delay album. In 2014, we did the Watkins Household tour collectively, after which the Mose Allison tribute file final 12 months.
“Moonlight trance evening walks amid hundreds of acres of pecan orchards in hallucinatory July summer season set the tone for us to discover in actuality these desires and visions Fiona had imparted to us.”
“There’s far more, however that is off high of my head.”
How did the longtime Austinite, now a denizen of Downtown Los Angeles since 2015, come to assist form Fetch the Bolt Cutters, whose classes he characterised as “extra like a sculpture being constructed than an album being made”? He answered questions from an hours-long, 3am deep dive of Apple’s biting, percussion-driven, tell-all with the next:
I had recognized Jon Brion since 1994, once I introduced him and Jason Falkner and their band the Greys to play some reveals with me in Texas. So we have been previous buddies.
In 2001, once I moved to Downtown L.A., I performed a Thursday weekly residency at Largo and would usually play with Jon on his Friday evening residency gigs. I had simply written a music referred to as “Outloud,” the place I sing the lyric, “The born gained’t dwell, the butter gained’t fly.” I walked offstage and Fiona walked as much as me and mentioned, “Did you simply say, ‘The butter gained’t fly?’”
It was both on one in every of my Thursdays or one in every of Jon’s Fridays, that little magic time and place she and I first met.
Labor of Love
It was the 4 of us: Fiona, Amy, Sebastian, and me towards this thriller. A LOT of labor, however quite a bit MORE love. Producing sensible, all of us 4 instinctively trusted and listened equally to every others’ opinions and silences. As for a full-on Tejano invasion, I talked my associates into the basic, “Órale, let’s go away L.A. at midnight and drive to El Paso and make a badass album” line!
Sonic Ranch: A mile from Rio Grande river, vibrant vitality of Juárez, rumors of Guadalupe Mountains smugglers’ gold buried in view of the 100-year-old haunted adobe room the place we recorded tribal rhythms. Moonlight trance evening walks amid hundreds of acres of pecan orchards in hallucinatory July summer season set the tone for us to discover in actuality these desires and visions Fiona had imparted to us.
The Tejano invasion perhaps is extra precisely the Tornillo frontera initiating us into our rock & roll mission.

Hand Drawn Artwork
Fiona herself is a powerfully distinctive, singular, visible artist. She did the hand drawn lovely artwork for her earlier album, The Loafer Wheel, which I cherished. She paints and sculpts her personal devices and artwork objects, and attracts and has achieved so for years.
Artwork-wise, we’re like highschool troublemakers in detention after college – enjoying Beautiful Corpse, buying and selling watercolors, pre-gig Sharpie tattoos, and many others. In late February, out of nowhere, she mentioned we wanted to start out doing album artwork, however she didn’t say precisely when. The day after she mentioned that, I flew to El Paso to supply the brand new Ozomatli album at Sonic Ranch.
After I received again to L.A. in mid March, COVID was in full swing.
“Fiona began texting the lyrics to me, one after the other. I wrote all of them by hand with no laptop for backspace or spellcheck, haha. [It was] like visible mountaineering, one letter at a time. Don’t look down!”
There have been no artwork shops open for provides, so I did what I might with what I had. Collage and print (not cursive) have been visible parts we each felt rhymed with the Earthy, tactile, visceral sound of the music – a vibe of a movie noir nameless ransom observe crossed with Rufino Tamayo palette and late Matisse cut-out artwork.
Fiona mentioned she cherished magenta. All I had was buckled, water broken, tracing paper. I used to be all out of legit watercolor paper and little or no blue to combine for a magenta. It was a critical squeeze of the toothpaste for each drop of blue for her magenta with no artwork shops open. It was full quarantine beneath the gun, so we couldn’t even focus on or brainstorm in particular person.
The mutual belief of artists made this occur – no ”artwork director” or “label man” and many others.

She has so many distinctive methods of claiming issues. Additionally, the road breaks and rhymes are sacred to any actual poet like Fiona, in order transcriber do you comply with the singing voice? Do you comply with the poetry?
Ending back and front covers and 13 lyrics encompassed portray, collage, calligraphy, and a few obscure factor referred to as “design” all with this pressing on-line launch clock ticking. What a wild journey.
The unbelievable response to the file? Come on, man, there’s just one Fiona Apple and there’s just one Fetch the Bolt Cutters. Each nice album has 10,000 tales. What extra can one say?!
